More Than Just a Getaway

Golden skies painted with the early hues of summer. The rhythmic hush of waves was interrupted only by laughter and the thud of a volleyball hitting the sand. It was the weekend, and Magellan Solutions wasn’t just clocking out; we were showing up for something deeper.

Over two days on the coast, we paused the grind and rediscovered something foundational: the power of community. This wasn’t a company outing for the sake of tradition. It was an intentional, spirited reminder that behind every role is a real person, and behind every team is a collective heartbeat. No Slack threads, no urgent pings—just people, presence, and purpose.

We came as colleagues and left as something more.

Why the Beach?

Some settings just make sense. The beach, in all its wild serenity, mirrors the Magellan mindset: resilient, fluid, and deeply human. Choosing this location wasn’t just about the view. It was about what the view represents.

April marked the close of a productive quarter, filled with growth, grit, and a few storms weathered. A beach weekend gave us space to celebrate wins, decompress, and reset as we looked ahead. And what better way to do that than surrounded by waves that remind us that motion is constant and calm always returns.

The Saturday-to-Sunday span allowed us to step fully into the experience. It wasn’t a rushed afternoon, and it was an immersive retreat.

Highlights of the Weekend

A. Day 1 – Games, Grit, and Golden Hours

Saturday morning arrived with a buzz of anticipation—and the unmistakable scent of sunscreen in the air. Teams formed fast, some in color-coordinated gear, others in glorious, chaotic mismatches that only added to the fun. The shoreline quickly transformed into a playground of grit, laughter, and unfiltered team spirit.

The Sack Race kicked things off—awkward hops, triumphant leaps, and a few tumbles that had everyone in stitches. It was impossible not to cheer as teammates bounced their way to the finish line, fueled more by laughter than speed.

Next up: the Hula Hoop Relay—a deceptively tricky game where six teammates held hands while passing a hula hoop across the line and back without breaking the chain. It demanded flexibility, teamwork, and just enough clumsiness to keep things hilarious. Strategies were whispered, but in the end, it was all about rhythm and cooperation.

Catch the Flag followed, bringing out a competitive edge no one saw coming. Each team of six brought their A-game as the frontline raced to snatch the flag from the opponent’s last player. Shouts, feints, and fast footwork turned the game into a thrilling mix of speed and strategy. Even the sidelines were electric, with teammates shouting plays like seasoned coaches.

And finally—Tug of War. The classic. Feet dug deep into the air, muscles tensed, and chants filled the air as teams pulled with everything they had. It wasn’t just about brute strength—it was about unity, timing, and that final, explosive heave that sent one side stumbling backward in a cloud of triumph.

As the sun melted into the sea, the mood softened. Volleyball nets came down, bonfires crackled to life, and conversations deepened. Over grilled food and shared drinks, teams swapped highlights from the day—cheering for epic plays, laughing at near-misses, and soaking in the warmth that only comes from a day spent playing and belonging.

B. Shared Meals, Real Conversations

There’s a certain magic when meals are shared without schedules. Dinner on Saturday was a feast—not just of food, but of moments. Teams that rarely interact cross-functionally found common ground. People who mostly connect via email swapped stories face-to-face.

Potluck-style contributions meant everyone had a hand in feeding the group. The buffet was an edible metaphor for Magellan itself: diverse, heartfelt, and better together.

Sunday’s breakfast was quieter but no less meaningful. Early risers caught sunrise views with coffee in hand, while others rolled in just in time for second servings and more conversation. The slow pace of the morning allowed reflection. And for many, that pause was just as important as the play.

C. Recognition Moments Beneath the Stars

Saturday evening also gave space for something sacred—gratitude.

With everyone gathered, leadership took a moment to spotlight individuals whose work, attitude, or presence had uplifted the team over the past months. It wasn’t scripted or performative. It was real. Recognition came with warmth and applause, not because of metrics but because of impact.

What made it special wasn’t just the awards; it was the way people cheered for each other. Titles didn’t matter; energy did. And in those moments, our culture was louder than the ocean.

A Quiet Constant: Fred Chua’s Leadership in Motion

Throughout the weekend—whether during games, group chats, or chill moments under the shade—one presence remained quietly steady: Fred Chua, CEO of Magellan Solutions.

Fred showed up the way great leaders do: fully present and fully engaged. From helping with logistics to laughing through the chaos of the sack race, he blended in—not as a figurehead, but as part of the team.

At one point, as the group cooled down after the games, someone joked, “Next year, Boracay na, Fred!” Without missing a beat, he smiled and replied, “We’re getting closer. Every outing just keeps getting better and better.”

That brief exchange said a lot. It wasn’t planned or polished—but it reflected exactly who Fred is: forward-looking, people-focused, and always listening.

His leadership doesn’t need a microphone or a podium. It shows up in the little things—in a quiet check-in, a shared laugh, or a simple gesture that reminds you that you’re seen, you’re valued.

Fred didn’t just come along for the trip. He helped set the tone—approachable, grounded, and genuine. And for everyone there, his presence wasn’t just appreciated. It mattered.

What We Took Home

When Monday came, and the sand was gone from our shoes but still somehow in our bags, something else remained: a deeper sense of connection.

We were reminded that:

  • Downtime isn’t optional—it’s essential.
  • The best communication happens when we’re not trying so hard.
  • Culture doesn’t come from company values on a wall—it comes from shared experiences.

Someone summed it up perfectly in a message sent later that week:

“It wasn’t just fun—it felt like a reset. Like we remember who we are when we’re at our best.”

That’s the kind of learning that sticks.

Looking Ahead: More Than Just a Memory

The waves may have rolled back, but their energy is still with us. And it’s carrying us into what’s next—new projects, new clients, new milestones.

But we’re not chasing growth for growth’s sake. We’re building with intention. And that means making space for more moments like April 5–6. More weekends that don’t just celebrate what we do, but why we do it, and who we’re doing it with.

Plans for the next event are already in motion. And the bar is set high.

One Team, Many Waves

To the organizers who pulled off a seamless weekend—to the drivers, the cooks, the game marshals, and the impromptu DJs—thank you.

To every team member who showed up with joy, energy, and sunscreen—thank you.

And to Fred, for leading not from above, but from among us—thank you.

April 5–6 reminded us that Magellan isn’t just a workplace. It’s a force. A culture. A movement. And the waves we made that weekend? They’re still rolling.

So let’s keep rising, together.
